Hurricane Hanna Tropical Storm Hanna Update

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING remains in effect for Chatham County.

AT 5:00 PM, the center of Tropical Storm Hanna was located near latitude 30.8 N, 78.7 W, or approximately 145 nautical miles southeast of Chatham County. Movement is to the northwest near 20 MPH. The National Weather Service has issued Tropical Storm WARNINGS from Altamaha Sound, GA northward along the Atlantic Coast to Sandy Hook, NJ. Hanna continues to move to the northwest but a
more prominent turn to the north is expected later this evening. This motion is expected to continue through the night with a turn toward the northeast and a faster forward speed. The center of Hanna should cross the southeastern coast of North Carolina tonight or early Saturday morning.

Due to Hanna’s change in course, Chatham County residents can expect to see sustained winds of less than 35 mph. There is still the possibility of power outages and downed trees, therefore any individual who relies on electricity for medial purposes should finalize emergency preparations. It is also expected that Chatham County will experience slightly higher tides and 1-3 inches of rain.

The Emergency Operations Center has been partially activated to monitor the storm and respond to any emergency situations. CEMA Volunteers have also been activated to assist with administrative support and answering public inquiries.

Again, please be advised that there are two additional storms in the Atlantic: Hurricane Ike (which is currently a Category 3) and Tropical Storm Josephine. Currently Hurricane Ike is located near latitude 22.9 N, 64.1 W, or approximately 1,182 nautical miles southeast of Chatham County. Movement is to the northwest near 15 MPH.
It is strongly recommended that Chatham County residents continue making improvements to their family preparedness plans. If you do not have family and pet evacuation plans, please establish them now (including evacuation transportation) for precautionary purposes.
