Alert: Tropical Storm Fay Update

Information Release #1

At 11:30 AM EDT, the center of Tropical Depression Barry was located near 27.1 North and 83.5 West or about 334 miles Southwest of Savannah. Barry is moving toward the Northeast near 20 mph. Maximum sustained are near 35 mph with higher gusts. A Flood Watch has been issued for our area and is in effect from 2 PM Saturday afternoon through late tonight. A High Surf Advisory in effect from 4 PM Saturday afternoon through 5 AM Sunday morning and there is a high risk for rip currents through this evening. A Flood Watch means that conditions could produce localized flooding. Flooding potential becomes greater near high tide.


Based on the current forecast the earliest impact to our area from remnants of Tropical Depression Barry would begin late Saturday evening. Chatham may begin to experience wind gusts this afternoon of 10-15 mph and this evening around 20-30 mph sustained winds gusting up to 40 mph. Rainfall amounts could exceed 3 inches in our area over the next 12 hours. Forecast amounts could vary depending on the track of the storm. Tornadoes associated with Tropical weather can form with little to no advance notice. Residents should remain alert and be prepared to protect life and property should a watch or warning be issued.


Any east or west deviation from the current forecast track could alter the wind and rain predicted for this area. CEMA will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as information becomes available.
