Hot Topic New Special Needs Registry Guidelines for Evacuations

SNR.jpgPrior to an emergency and/or disaster, it is essential that the special needs of people with disabilities are adequately addressed and that each individual has an evacuation plan. Right before, during and after a disaster, emergency responders may be overwhelmed and not able to assist each individual need of Chatham County’s citizens. Therefore it is critical that individuals take responsibility for themselves by preparing an emergency preparedness plan.

In the event that Chatham County residents must evacuate due to an emergency and/or disaster, the CEMA and the Department of Public Health have prepared a Chatham County Special Needs Plan to assist individuals who are without family assistance and transportation. This Plan is designed to guide county officials through the evacuation process of individuals with special needs before a disaster may strike. Included in this document is a Special Needs Registry in which individuals who have unique needs may register with a Public Health Nurse to be safely evacuated from their homes by Chatham County officials.

While it is strongly encouraged that each individual in Chatham County prepare their own family evacuation plan, the Chatham County Special Needs Plan has been designed to assist special needs individuals who are without transportation and cannot safely evacuate with the general population.
