Tropical Storm Fay

At 8:00 AM Tuesday, Tropical Storm Fay was located near latitude 26.50 North, longitude 81.40 West or about 400 miles South of Chatham County near Ft. Myers, FL and was moving toward the NNE near 9 mph.

This general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours then gradually turn toward the west. Fay is expected to slowly decrease in intensity over the next several days. The current forecast is favorable for Chatham County keeping the storm South of the Georgia Coast.

Minor changes with each advisory could result in major changes in the forecast track and storm dynamics. Due to the proximity of the storm, CEMA will remain in Operating Condition (OPCON) 4. OPCON 4 is considered the Monitoring Phase as defined by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and is the first stage in advanced readiness. All interested parties should remain vigilant in monitoring the storm through local media.

It’s prudent to initiate a thorough check of emergency supplies, review established hurricane plans and determine the availability of assets, resources and personnel. Those agencies that have the responsibility to share information should be doing so at this time.

The Emergency Operations Center is not activated.

Basic Storm Spotter Class

The National Weather Service Charleston will be teaching the Basic Severe Weather Spotter Class on March 26th from 7:00pm-9:00pm at the Chatham County Annex Building. This class is free to anyone that wants to attend.

The storm spotter serves a community by participating in an organized effort to watch for storms approaching the community and warn of the formation of tornadoes or other threatening severe weather. An NWS meteorologist will visit and use nationally- prepared slide and film materials to help the spotters learn what to look for and how to remain safe in their operation.

Please contact Dustin Hetzel with the Chatham Emergency Management Agency at (912) 201-4500 or DJHetzel@chathamcounty.org to register for this class.
