News Discontinuation of CEMA Signal Emails

Savannah, GA - (July 12, 2011)

The Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) is terminating the use of CEMA Signal emails.

One of the main goals of CEMA is to alert the public when the threat of danger is imminent or happening as well as provide important preparedness information.

Currently CEMA is utilizing a variety of communication tools including email alerts, Twitter, Facebook and the CEMA website.

Because there are so many ways information can be disseminated, CEMA has decided to do away with our CEMA Signal emails; the last day is August 15th, 2011.  CEMA Signal emails were designed to inform Chatham County residents about events like road closures and meeting announcements along with general preparedness tips.  CEMA will continue to provide that information on the CEMA website, www.ChathamEmergency.org, and on Facebook.

The CEMA Alert emails will continue.  Information distributed through those emails will focus on emergency situations including things like hurricane advisories and major events that impact Chatham County.  If you have not signed up to receive CEMA Alerts, please do so at www.ChathamEmergency.org, scroll to the center of the homepage and enter your email address in the space indicated under CEMA Alert.

If you are not following CEMA on Twitter and/or Facebook, you are encouraged to sign up now.

I.          Twitter:  CEMA utilizes Twitter to instantaneously disseminate information about events and emergencies.
A.        If you already have a Twitter account, in your settings choose to have CEMA alerts sent to your mobile phone.
B.        If you do NOT have a Twitter account send a text message to "40404".  In the body of the message type "follow ChathamEMA" and hit send (Do not use quotation marks in text message).
C.        To create a Twitter account visit www.Twitter.com.

II.         Facebook:  CEMA utilizes a Facebook account to disseminate information about events and emergencies.  CEMA also uses Facebook to distribute preparedness tips, community events involving CEMA and to promote emergency preparedness discussions among residents of Chatham County.  Facebook is not designed to be instantaneous; it allows for a more detailed discussion of events.
A.        You must have a Facebook account to interact with CEMA on Facebook.
B.        To create an account:
           1.         Go to http://www.facebook.com
           2.         Enter your first name, last name, valid e-mail address, password, gender and birthday.
           3.         If prompted, enter the Captcha (validation code of letters & numbers).
           4.         Confirm your account.
           5.         It's a good idea to change your profile settings to prevent people you haven't confirmed as "friends"    from accessing your profile. The link to privacy settings is at the top and bottom right of the page.
           6.         Once you have an account, you can find CEMA at www.facebook.com/ChathamEMA.
C.        You can also search for Chatham Emergency Management Agency or ChathamEMA in the search bar once you log into Facebook.  Once you find the ChathamEMA page, click the "Like" button at the top of the page.

Again the CEMA Signal emails will stop August 15th; please take the time now to sign up for the other CEMA alerts.
