Excessive Heat Warning in Effect
Savannah, GA - (July 13, 2011)
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning in effect from 11am to 9pm today. The heat index could reach 113 to 117 degrees.
Chatham County residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, check on relatives and neighbors, avoid outdoors as much as possible and if you have to be outside take frequent breaks.
The American Red Cross offers additional suggestions on dealing with the heat:
* Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
* Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
* Eat small meals and eat more often.
* Avoid extreme temperature changes.
* Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun's rays.
* Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
* Postpone outdoor games and activities.
* Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
* Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
