President Street Closed this weekend
Savannah, GA – August 6, 2009, 10:30 AM


East President Street just west of the Truman Parkway will be closed to
traffic in both directions through the weekend to allow for necessary
rail crossing repairs.

Traffic will be detoured on this heavily traveled east-west route from 8
p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9.

Officials with the Rail Link, which owns the lines, approached the City
of Savannah recently indicating that repairs to the crossing needed to
be made as soon as possible. City and County officials worked with the
company to investigate alternatives to a full road closure. Because the
rails at the crossing are a single piece spanning the entire roadway,
and can only be removed and replaced as singles spans, it was determined
that both lanes of President Street would have to be closed during the
work.

The City and County then worked with the company to devise an
around-the-clock weekend work schedule to minimize the number of closure
days and to interfere with commuter traffic as little as possible.

Westbound President Street traffic (headed downtown) will be detoured
south on the Truman Parkway to the Henry Street Exit to Waters Avenue to
Wheaton and East Broad streets. Eastbound traffic (headed to the
islands) will be detoured at East Broad to Wheaton to Gwinnett to
Pennsylvania then to President Street. Please see attached detour map.

Detour signs and display messages will be positioned to direct traffic.
Motorists can expect delays.
