DUSTIN HETZEL

Dustin Hetzel is a Senior Emergency Management Coordinator (Emergency Management Specialist III) for Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA). Since 2005, he has been involved in everything technical CEMA's Operations. He currently oversees the agency's Duty Officer program that includes the agency's Duty Officer's response to incidents such as Severe Weather Events, Utility Failures and Missing People.

His daily duties are to ensure the three Emergency Operations Centers are ready to operate at a moment's notice. He coordinates with local governmental, public and private agencies (including their respected data and communication Staff/Department), to ensure that the Emergency Support Function 2 Communications and Warning (ESF-2), Emergency Support Function 4 Fire Services (ESF-4) and Emergency Support Function 13 Law Enforcement (ESF-13) is ready for any man-made or natural disaster to affect Chatham County.

Dustin also oversees the Emergency Warning Siren System (Tornado Warning Sirens) ensuring that people engaged in outdoor activities will be adequately warned if there is an emergency occurring or about to occur in Chatham County and the County's portion of the Community Notification System (currently SwiftReach 911).


Prior to his hiring at CEMA, he worked five years as a computer technician for Chatham County ICS where his duties covered troubleshooting & fixing PCs, Servers and Networks. He also served as the Data Backup Administrator as well as a backup to ICS's Telecommunications Administrator. During this time, Dustin worked in the EOC as a computer technician for many events including the G8. Finally, Dustin has been volunteering during the Elections since 2001 as a Poll Technician. Some of the duties he performs during the Election are to manage the up to and sometimes over a dozen polling sites across the County. He helps coordinate any issues at those polling sites so that the sites process voters seamlessly during the elections as well as troubleshoot and fix the voting equipment.

Dustin has his Associates Degree in Networking from West Georgia Technical College.  He currently holds a Technician's License in Amateur Radio and has a Georgia Class F CDL License to drive the Mobile Emergency Operations Center. He continues to maintain his Georgia Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency's Certified Emergency Manager certification.

The Chatham County Siren System

The Chatham Emergency Management Agency conducts monthly tests of our emergency warning sirens on the first Wednesday of each month at 12 noon. If you hear a siren at any other time, it means take cover! Read more about our warning siren program.
