Hurricane Florence 9:00am Update

Chatham County, GA (September 13, 2018) - The Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) continues to monitor Hurricane Florence and potential impacts it may bring to Chatham County.

The 5 am update from the National Weather Service indicates that Georgia could see storm conditions as early as Thursday night and continuing into the weekend. Residents in areas that typically flood should stay alert for possible flood risks.

There are currently no evacuation orders for Chatham County. However, CEMA Director, Dennis Jones, encourages residents who feel unsafe to evacuate as they see fit.

CEMA is encouraging residents to finalize their preparedness efforts. Some activities may include:

·       Now is the time to check your emergency plan and emergency supplies kit and take necessary actions to protect your family and secure your home or business.

·       When making safety and preparedness decisions, do not focus on the exact forecast track since hazards such as flooding rain and wind gusts may exist outside of the storm track.

·       If in a place that is vulnerable to high wind, such as near large trees, a manufactured home, upper floors of a high-rise building, or on a boat, plan to move to safe shelter.

·       If you live in a place particularly vulnerable to flooding, such as a low-lying or poor drainage area, plan to move to safe shelter on higher ground.

For a list of other items visit the CEMA website, ChathamEmergency.org.

Savannah Chatham County Public School System has cancelled all after-school activities beginning Thursday. Public schools will be closed on Friday, September 14th
